Sage AI is not one feature. It is Sage Copilot, a set of specialist finance agents and the AI Gateway, all built on the Sage Intacct general ledger. Here is what each part does, what it looks like in practice, and what your team still owns.
Sage AI is a marketing umbrella, not a single product you switch on. Underneath it are three different things, and keeping them apart makes the whole picture much easier to plan around.
The first is Sage Copilot, a finance assistant built directly into Sage Intacct. The second is a set of AI agents, each one a specialist that handles a specific finance task. The third is the AI Gateway, a secure connection that lets outside AI tools work with your Sage Intacct data. All three sit on the same foundation: the multi-dimensional general ledger that runs your books.
Sage Copilot is the part most people mean when they say Sage AI. It works inside Sage Intacct rather than as a separate tool, so it already knows your ledger, dimensions and reports. You ask it for something in plain language and it responds with data, a draft or an action for you to approve.
In practice it automates the repetitive edges of finance work. It helps process accounts payable, tracks what is left to do in the close, runs reports across financial and operational data, and spots figures that look wrong. It can also generate content, for example a polite payment reminder for a customer whose invoice is overdue. The pattern is consistent throughout: Copilot pulls the information together and proposes the next step, and a person decides whether to act. The short introduction below shows it at work.
Where Copilot is the general assistant, the AI agents are specialists. Each is built for one narrow finance task and does that job well, and Sage keeps adding to the set. You reach them through Copilot, so it feels like a single assistant that quietly calls on the right expert. Five agents matter most for finance teams today, and the newest, the Finance Intelligence Agent, is shown in the clip below.
| Agent | What it does | Status* |
|---|---|---|
| AP Automation | Captures supplier invoices, suggests the ledger coding, matches to purchase orders and flags likely duplicates before they are paid. | In Sage Intacct |
| Close | Tracks month-end close activities, points out where things are running late and guides the team through the tasks that remain. | In Sage Intacct |
| Financial Assurance | Reviews journal entries for errors, duplicate activity and transactions that fall outside the normal pattern, so issues surface early. | In Sage Intacct |
| Time | Drafts timesheet entries from the trail of meetings, emails and other work activity. Useful for project and services teams that bill by time. | In Sage Intacct |
| Finance Intelligence | Answers more complex, natural-language questions by drawing on the other agents at once, returning data, analysis and a recommendation together. | Early adopter |
* Availability varies by Sage Intacct edition and region. The Finance Intelligence Agent launched first in the US, UK and Canada as an early-adopter release. Confirm what is switched on for South Africa before planning around a specific agent.
Copilot and the agents live inside Sage Intacct. The AI Gateway faces the other way. It is a secure connectivity layer that lets an approved external AI application work with your Sage Intacct data, without you copying that data into an uncontrolled tool.
It offers two routes. An MCP server handles read-only work: exploring data, asking natural-language questions and running analysis, with no ability to change records. REST APIs handle structured integrations and workflows that can create or update supported records. Access is governed with built-in controls, so you decide what any connected tool is allowed to see and do. For a finance team this is the difference between using AI on your real numbers and pasting a spreadsheet into a public chatbot.
Strip away the labels and the benefit is simple: less manual capture, fewer errors slipping through, and faster answers when someone asks a question. Because the automation runs on one connected ledger rather than a pile of spreadsheets, the gains compound through the month instead of arriving in a panic at period end. The biggest single prize is a faster close, as the clip below shows.
This is where honesty matters more than a feature list. Sage is releasing this technology in stages. The 2026 Release 1 update, which went live on 13 February 2026, brought a wave of AI and automation into Sage Intacct. Newer capabilities such as the Finance Intelligence Agent arrived after that as an early-adopter programme, and launched first in the United States, United Kingdom and Canada.
For a South African team, that means some AI is available now while other agents are phased and region dependent. Before you build a process around a specific agent, confirm what is switched on for your edition of Sage Intacct and your region. That single check saves a lot of disappointment, and it is exactly the kind of question your implementation partner should answer plainly.
You do not adopt Sage AI in one switch. The teams that get value move in a sensible order, starting with clean data and the most mature agent, then widening out as confidence grows. If you would like a fuller walkthrough first, the in-depth clip below is a good place to start.

The value of Sage AI in South Africa is the same as anywhere, less manual capture and faster answers, but the guardrails are local. VAT accuracy at invoice capture feeds straight into your VAT201 returns on SARS eFiling, so getting AP coding right early reduces the reconciliation pain at period end. Under POPIA you remain responsible for where financial and personal data is processed, which is why a governed platform with role-based access and a controlled AI Gateway matters more than a clever demo.
None of this removes your team from the loop. A person still approves every payment, applies judgement on material transactions, and signs off on VAT201, IFRS treatment and POPIA obligations. AI moves skilled people off data entry and onto review and analysis, which is the point of adopting it at all. Brilliant ERP implements and supports Sage Intacct for South African finance teams, including migrations from Pastel, Sage 50 and Sage 200 Evolution, and can tell you exactly which AI capabilities apply to your business today.
Not quite. Sage AI is the umbrella term. Sage Copilot is the finance assistant built into Sage Intacct, the specialist AI agents handle individual tasks like the close or accounts payable, and the AI Gateway connects Sage Intacct to outside AI tools. Copilot is the part you talk to, but it is one piece of a larger set.
Some Sage AI and automation is already available in Sage Intacct, while the newest agents are being released in phases and launched first in the United States, United Kingdom and Canada. Availability depends on your edition and region, so the honest answer is to confirm what is switched on for your account. Brilliant ERP can check current availability for South African customers.
For most finance teams, accounts payable automation is the best starting point. It is the most mature agent, it targets the highest-volume manual task, and it usually delivers the clearest and fastest return. Once invoice capture and coding are running smoothly, the assurance and close agents are natural next steps.
No. Sage Copilot and the agents work inside Sage Intacct on their own. The AI Gateway is only needed when you want an approved external AI tool to work with your Sage Intacct data, for example a custom application or another system. Many teams use Copilot without ever touching the Gateway.
It depends on your Sage Intacct subscription and which capabilities you want. Some AI and automation is part of the platform, while certain newer agents may be phased or licensed separately as they become generally available. Rather than guess, ask your Sage partner to confirm what is included in your edition and what would be an add-on.
No. The agents suggest, draft and flag, but a person stays in control. The AP Agent proposes coding and flags duplicates, the Financial Assurance Agent reviews entries and highlights anomalies, and you approve the outcome. Through the AI Gateway, the MCP server is read-only, and only REST API workflows you configure can create or update records.
Sage Intacct keeps records in a controlled cloud environment with role-based access, and the AI Gateway adds built-in controls over what any connected AI tool can see and do. That said, under POPIA the responsibility stays with your organisation. Using governed features on your real data is far safer than copying financial information into an uncontrolled public AI tool.
No. Sage AI handles repetitive work such as capturing invoices, tracking the close and flagging unusual entries, but it does not replace finance professionals. Your team still approves payments, interprets results and owns compliance. The role shifts from data entry towards review, analysis and decision-making.
